What is Female Genital Mutilation

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is to impair, notably by cutting off or otherwise disabling a part in the female S@x organ. World Health Organization regarded FGM as gender inequality as it deprives the Females in many ways.

Our Guest, Dr. Andrew Abisola shared more lights to FGM.

Quest: What is the origin of this FGM

Guest: Thanks for having me. FGM origin looks obscue though, but there has been anthropological and historical research to help us understand how the practice came about. Some Researchers have traced the origin from the time of slavery, In 1609, where ladies are sewed to prevent them from having any s@xual interco@rse.

FGM is topically attached to religious belief, it is practised in some communities with the belief that it is a religious requirement that must be do; it started before the advent of Christianity and Islam.

Quest: Dr., since It is an old Pratice, why are we still practicing it these days?

Guest: FGM is practised today as a result of the mix religious, Social and  cultural factors within the community space and society. FGM is considered as an important step of raising a girl properly and preparing her for adulthood/marriage

Quest: What are the Effects? Are there positive ones?

Guest: To be sincere, there is no positive effect to FMG. All are negatives because it deprived most Women from enjoying their Marriage.

The effects of FGM on Girl-child and women is dependent on many factors which include: how expert the practitioner is, the amount of resistance from the victim, the hygiene condition under which it is performed is also a big issue, etc..

Sharp Objects Used For FGM

• These are the Effects of Female Genital Mutilation

Some of the Medical implications include:  Shock, Sharp pains, haemorrhage, tetanus infection, urinary tract infection, fever and could also lead to death. 

Other consequences include: risk to HIV/AIDS,  low sex drive,  complications during childbirth, anaemia, damage to the urethra resulting in urinary incontinence,  dyspareunia,  hypersensitivity of the genital area, etc.

Quest: For people to still do this, there must be something attached to FGM.

Guest: Yes, there are some superstitions and beliefs attached to FGM, those stuffs are purely misconceptions though.

Quest: Can we have some of them Dr.?

Guest: Sure, first as Religious Tradition; many people believed that FGM is attached to some religious traditions that authentic it. It's capital NO!

Another one is that some people believed FGM is recommended Medically. No, it isn't. Matter of fact, FGM has no health benefit and has only caused harm to the reproductive health of Girl-child and women around the world. Most homes are destroyed by this. Hence, it's is not Medically or scientifically  advised.

Quest: Is FGM only performed on women?

Guest: Though, there has been different beliefs on the performance of FGM, which some believed that FGM Is only performed on babies at their birth, so that it won't have much effect on them. Some also believed that only women experience FGM. But, the truth is  anyone does; babies, young girls, ladies, Pregnant women, married women all experience it.

Guest: Is FGM only happening in Africa?

Guest: No, the FGM is happening all over the world, not only in African Countries. In 2017, the United Nations reported that the number of victims has risen to 250 million girls and women around the World.

Quest: Is FG still rampant these days?

Guest: not really, but more awareness is needed to put a total end to FGM. I appeal to the Media, Government and all relevant NGOs and Stakeholders to help in the awareness program. It must stop. We need to stop endangering lives of the Girl-child and Women because it's a crime against humanity. It must stop.
