SJC Election should be done through voting by all the Students in the Faculty - Hon. Justice Ajakaye Damilola Solomon (Coach Dammy)

Previous week edition of Eagle View Reports' "Hard Talk" featured crucial discussions on the insight to the AAUA judiciary Arm. We had an exclusive interview with the emeritus Hon. Justice of the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences (SOMASSA) - Hon. Justice Solomon.

Hon. Justice Solomon defined the Students' Judiciary Council as "The third organ of the government which has the responsibility to apply the laws to specific cases and settle all disputes." He also said "The real 'meaning of law’ is what the judges decide during the course of giving their judgements in various cases."

Hon. Justice Solomon however gave some reasons why the SJC election should be collectively done by the whole Students of the faculty and not by the Legislative arm.  He highlighted some of the reasons that:  "It's not all students that know what SJC is all about; it's not all students that know there's court in AAUA; It's not all students that know they can sue any student to court in AAUA". He added that not all students that know their rights in the school and 95 percent did not know member of SJC and the duties as Hon. Justice.

Looking at his reasons, he opined that by allowing all the students from faculty to be voting their SJC member, they will all know all these above, and have good understanding of what SJC is all about, because the aspirants will go into manifesto; which he will be able to tell what SJC is all about to the students. By doing this, he said Students will be familiar with the SJC.

Eagle View Reports' Political analyst- Jide Ayogbemi said the AAUA Unionism is often revolving around the Legislature and the Executive organ. According to him, most of the faculties' SJC aren't well constituted, funded and some of those who are constituted are under the power of the legislature or the Executive organ.

Our Data analyst explained that not more than 20% of AAUAites are aware of the Judiciary Arm and their personnels. Also, 70 - 80% cases are often refered to AAUASU-SJC by Students, while 30 to 20% cases are settled within the Faculty.

In making more students understand the praticle aspect of the SJC, our Political analyst suggested that "More awareness should be created by the SJC, the SJC must be independent and transparent"

Hon. Justice Solomon further quoted from what he called "the citizen’s point of view", he said "Judiciary is the most important organ of the government, because it acts as their protector against the possible excesses of legislative and executive organs." He said the role of Judiciary as the guardian-protector of the constitution and the fundamental rights of the people makes it more respectable than other two organs. Hon. Justice Solomon opined that due to those fact, "The SJC election should be done through voting by all the students in the faculty."
